\nThe devise oozez ‘sexy’ and ‘desireable’. I tried to get one but had to wait for about 2 weeks to get one as everyone was out of stock. Sales people would nearly laugh in your face when you ask ‘do you have any iPod’s in stock?’ it was so bad they would not even take pre-orders. Eventually I got desperate and wrote some scripts to scrape websites to find out if they have stock. After about 9 days of scraping these sites every 2 hours one had stock.
\nI phoned up the supplier and asked for one, they said I was very lucky as they had almost sold out the 30 they got in THAT MORNING.
\nAs I said it is one sexy peice of kit, the box is amasing, its a perfect cube that flips open in the middle, to reveal all the goodies, it really is a nice experience unpacking it – you know your \u00a3300 went to a good designer.
\nThe device itself is as expected really nice, it has a reassuring heavyness. I am a bit worried about how easy it is to be scratched and the metal is very fingerprint prone. The protective pocket that is supplied is quite nice though I have read that the clips break off quite easily, infact Apple has removed these from their warrenty.
\nAs I am not lucky enough to have a Apple computer I am forced to use it on a PC. It is supplied with Musicmatch Jukebox with a plugin for the Apple. The software is OK, it is not mind blowing in any way though I have been using the free version of Musicmatch for years for ripping all my CDs. Transfering music is pretty simple and works. Drag and Drop, hit sync and you are done (after some extended wait). To facilitate copying I got a PC Firewire card, it is supposed to provide power to the iPod aswell but unfortunatly the PC card does not do this for some reason.
\nMany of the great features are only available when used with iMusic on a Mac. Things like auto generated playlists based on your rating of music etc. There are some other gimicks the Mac users have such as tools to upload news from sites onto the iPod’s internal note viewer.
\nThe user interface is awsome, no moving parts, no buttons etc, it is all very intuitive and I only had to refer to the – pretty minimal – documentation once.
\nThe device comes with some extra utilities such as games, calendar, contacts and note reader, I have not used these, I think they are too light weight to compete with a proper PDA.
\nI got the 15Gb model which comes with the wired remote. The remote is minimal at best and frankly it is just not good enough when compared to that supplied with Sony NetMDs and other players on the market.
\nAnyhow, suffice to say I am very happy with the device bar a few problems, more on this below. I would suggest it to anyone right now, though I expect a competitor would find it easy to improve on it if they put their mind to it.
\nPros:
\n– Very sexy, designer and classy
\n– Simple user interface
\n– Ample storage
\n– Firewire is fast compared to USB solutions
\n– Excellent buffer that prevents skipping, I have never had any skiping
\n– It’s a Apple.
\nCons:
\n– Bad battery life, only 6 hours
\n– I had a few crashes where I had to reset the device
\n– BAD remote control
\n– Not enough software for the PC
