Most of us have seen these XML icons all over the net thesedays, especially on blogs. Infact you should see one bottom left on this very page. This icon is the placeholder for what some believe is the way of the future for any news and discussion publishing system – called RSS (DMOZ) it consists of a simple XML format that clients pull on-demand and view in special application software.

A bit about RSS and news aggregators.

[1
52

I have been using a RSS Aggregator called NewzCrawler for a few months now and I am totally hooked. Previously my daily ability to read news was limited to no more than 5 sites and even that was a push. Today I have 29 different sites that I keep up with and I do this in less time than it took me to follow just the 5.

The thing that makes it really great is you can put your news feeds in categories and quickly glance over them, select the story you are interested in and – depending on the quality of the feed – immediatly get either the short synopsis or the full story. It remembers what you have seen before and in the case of NewzCrawler lets you run searches and even publish to your blog.

Today a story appeared on slashdot about news letters switching to RSS to combat the fact that people just do not subscribe to them anymore – a result of the lack of confidence in on-line email services due to spam – and those who are subscribed to them are unlikely to get them since a newsletter looks too much like spam to automated filters. I am all for the switch and am delighted to see that the likes of Source Forge are providing per project RSS feeds now, this makes it so simple to keep up to date with latest realeases of apps important to you.

The only wish I have is that the all RSS feeds were created equal. Those provided by NewsForge does not provide details of the individual story, they simply link to their pages, this is highly annoying.

For a good view of what is available out there have a look at Syndic8 this is the easiest way to find RSS feeds (33 000 feeds at the moment). Or simply take a close look at your favorite online publishers site, chances are they already have news feeds setup.

Some other interesting spin-offs from the blogging world and enabled by feeds such as these are Feedster a search engine for over 180 000 seperate feeds and even Google is in on it by recently buying Blogger expect some really interesting things to come from this.
