I purchased a Nikkor 70-300mm G lens for my D70 this week. I have never had a zoom lens before and was not sure if I would use it much so I opted for the cheapest on the market – £115 – once I know I like it I will get the real thing.
I was not expecting much from the lens since the usual know-it-all’s on the forums were having nothing but bad to say about its clarity around the 300mm mark, well I am glad to say I am absolutely very happy with the lens.
It does fantastic long distance shots which in combination with my 18-70mm gives me an amasing 16x magnification, it also does great with the kinds of shots where the background needs to be distorted.
Click on the image for some more flower shots which demonstrate the depth of field you get out of a long lens nicely.

There is a interesting look inside the Nikon D70 factory in Thailand that is set to produce 800 000 D70’s in 2004, interesting pictures etc.
The projected production run for 2004 is 800,000 units of the D70 camera body from the Nikon Thailand factory. The D70 has been eagerly awaited world wide by photographers because it is the first Digital SLR camera body to challenge the immensely popular Canon 300D (Digital Rebel).
Nikon has gone Canon better this time and produced a camera that has capabilities so far not available at this camera’s price point and some capabilities not available before at any price point. Although prices may vary in different regions, the current battle between Canon and Nikon is for the US $999. digital SLR camera market.

I am dying to get my hands on a Nikon D70 that was announced last December and again in January, so far they are not in the shops and no-one can get their hands on demo models to write about them.
A few preview reviews have been published but nothing major yet, I came across another today that was not mentioned before by a non-commercial reviewer and so far I have to say I cannot wait to get my old kit sold and buy the new camera.
The annoying thing is Nikon is not doing anything at this point to feed the hype, even the sample images that were released are of pre-production models and traditionally the difference in quality can be massive. The UK suppliers are taking pre-orders and quoting early March delivery, I hope they are right ๐
UPDATE:
I noticed a lot of people come here looking for sample images taken with the D70, here are a few links I found on-line to help you guys out:

I bought the Coolpix 5700, its a very good camera but I must say Nikon must be kidding with the accessories, especially considering the ยฃ820 price tag.
They give a 16Mb Memory Card with a 5 Megapixels camera, that is completely useless.
The strap supplied with the camera is short and rather rough, it used to srape my neck and hurt all the time. The end result is that I am now in the market for a new neck strap, and this seems to be a trial and error process. What I would really like is a strap with a swivel connector to prevent the constant twisting.
